Honoring Tony Cross: The Heart Behind the Pack
The T.C. Sword Animation Pack was started back in 2017. We knew we wanted to create a pack with a base set of sword motions with add-on animations for various types of weapons, but we did not want to create one that was just like all of the others. Our goal was to create a truly unique sword animation pack compared to anything else on the market.
Tony Cross, a MoCap Online associate, was the brainchild behind this whole project. Tony's idea was to base the pack on over-the-top weapons and gameplay similar to Dark Souls, one of his favorite games. He wanted to include animations that fit the iconic "Ultra Greatsword" ten-foot behemoth as well as other unique and outrageous motions.
While we were all excited to make this sword pack, Tony was the driving force behind the entire operation. He brought the enthusiasm, did the research, wrote the shot list, ran the mocap shoot, and even acted in the shots. The dedication he exuded for this animation pack was exceptionally impressive to witness.
Tony's inspiration came from his life experience participating in realistic and historically accurate Viking fight reenactments where he used real weapons, and he also passionately practiced martial arts.
He was a big, loud, fun, bearded dude who loved mocap animation and working in the game industry. Unfortunately, Tony passed away shortly after our first capture session, leaving his work incomplete.
May his body rest in peace and the mocapped motion of his that is featured in so many of our current animation packs live on forever.
Tony's Legacy Lives On
Tony's animations continue to live on in our library, a lasting tribute to his passion and expertise. The T.C. Sword Animation Pack remains available as a free download — Tony would have wanted it that way.
We invite you to check out the animations and the video below. Every motion in this sword animation pack carries the energy and spirit Tony brought to everything he did.
What's Included in the T.C. Sword Animation Pack
The T.C. Sword Animation Pack contains a curated set of professional motion capture sword combat animations, all captured in a professional studio with high-end optical motion capture equipment. These are not keyframed animations — every clip is authentic human movement recorded from a real performer.
The pack includes a variety of sword combat animations designed for action games, RPGs, and interactive projects:
- Sword slashes and swings — horizontal, vertical, and diagonal attacks with varied intensity and timing
- Blocking and defensive stances — reactive defensive animations for parrying and guarding
- Combat combo sequences — multi-hit attack chains that flow naturally from one strike to the next
- Idle stances — ready-position animations for when the character is armed but not actively attacking
- Over-the-top greatsword motions — inspired by Dark Souls-style ultra weapons, these heavy swings and powerful strikes bring dramatic weight and impact to your characters
All animations in this sword animation pack are professionally cleaned and retargeted, ready to drop into your game engine or animation pipeline with minimal adjustment. Browse our full animation library for additional combat and melee packs that complement this set.

Sword Combat Animation Systems
Sword combat in games requires careful animation design to feel responsive and impactful. This sword animation pack provides the core sword fighting vocabulary: slashes from multiple angles, thrusts, parries, blocks, ripostes, and combination attacks. Each animation is captured with a physical prop sword for authentic weapon momentum and follow-through.
When implementing sword combat in your game, the animation state machine should prioritize responsiveness. Players expect their input to produce immediate visual feedback, so transition times between attack states should be short (0.1–0.15 seconds for light attacks, 0.2–0.3 for heavy attacks). These sword animations include clear startup, active, and recovery frames that you can tune for the exact combat pacing your design requires.
Combining Sword and Movement Animations
For a complete melee character system, layer sword attacks over locomotion using upper-body animation blending. Your character can swing while moving by playing the sword animation on the upper body and walk or run animations on the lower body. In Unreal Engine, use Animation Montages with upper body slots; in Unity, use Avatar Masks for body-part isolation.
